Key cover - car insurance

What is key cover?

Key cover insurance is a specialist cover designed to cover the expenses you'd face if your keys were lost, stolen or damaged.

If you lose or have your keys stolen in the UK, you're covered for replacing your locks and keys. Your cover may also include protection for other keys, such as those for your shed or garage, so long as they were attached to your insured keys at the time of loss or damage.

What’s included with key cover?

If you choose to add our Key Cover extra to your policy, you will be covered for all keys attached to the car key that was lost, damaged, or stolen. You will also be covered for the following:

  • A purple tick
    Vehicle hire charges

Up to £50 per day, for up to 3 days if you can’t use your car because of lost or stolen keys.

  • A purple tick
    Onward transport costs

up to £100 per claim, to get you or your vehicle to a destination of your choice; either a garage or your home if you lose your keys.

  • A purple tick
    Up to £40 per claim

for a replacement key and locksmith charges if an insured key is broken.

  • A purple tick
Finally, key cover claims have no excess

so this won’t be deducted from the eligible claimed amount.

How do I check if key cover is included in my car insurance?

Key cover is an optional level of cover that isn’t included in any of our car insurance policies as standard. If you have key cover, you will have chosen to add it when you bought your policy.
