This means others are protected if you cause injury or damage. Policy Expert car insurance additionally gives you financial protection against accidents, theft, and damage as standard across all cover we offer. The type and level of cover you choose depends on your needs.

Upgrade your car insurance cover

We offer various optional extras to enhance your car insurance cover. These include:

  • Breakdown cover

Breakdown cover means help arrives when your vehicle breaks down. You'll get roadside assistance and recovery, or money towards a place to stay or a method of travelling home, if needed. Depending on your level of cover, breakdowns at home and in Europe are also covered.

  • Key protection

Keys can go missing, get stolen or break. Replacing them isn't cheap. With key cover, we'll replace your keys and cover any locksmith costs too.

  • Motor legal protection

Motor legal protection is an optional add-on to your policy that can support the recovery of your uninsured losses (for example, your excess or out-of-pocket expenses) following an accident that wasn't your fault.

  • Personal accident cover

Personal accident cover pays a fixed amount in the event of you or your partner receiving serious injuries or being killed in an accident. This is in addition to the standard amount for personal accident in your core motor policy.**

  • Replacement vehicle

Replacement vehicle cover is an optional extra that provides you with a temporary car for up to 21 days, if your car is unable to be repaired or stolen and not recovered.

  • Excess protection

This cover reimburses the excess you've paid out of your own pocket if you have a claim that is your fault. If you claim, this product will pay you back the excess that we have charged you.

These add-ons can provide additional peace of mind and protection for your needs. Exclusions and limitations apply, ensure you read the policy wording carefully.

Why do I need car insurance?

Car insurance is a legal requirement for any car used in the UK (and in Europe). It’s also essential for your financial protection. Where you have an accident or are stopped by police and do not have this cover in place, you could be prosecuted, face severe penalties and even be personally liable for any damages or injuries caused (in an accident).

What isn’t included in your car cover?

While car insurance provides extensive protection, there are a number of exclusions which are not covered. You can find them in your policy wording – but here are a few key ones:

  • Wear and tear.
  • Mechanical or electrical failures.
  • Driving other vehicles (unless the policy covers it).
  • Using your car for purposes not declared on your policy.

Which type of car insurance type is right for me?

The right type for you depends on factors such as your car’s value, your driving history, and your budget.

  • Comprehensive

Comprehensive car insurance offers the most extensive protection. It includes all the benefits of TPFT, plus coverage for damage to your own vehicle, even if an accident is deemed to be your fault. Additional benefits often include personal injury protection for you and your partner as well as cover for personal belongings kept in your car, depending on level of cover. Our Silver and Gold covers include windscreen repair or replacement. Courtesy car provision while yours is being repaired is subject to availability.

  • Third-party only (minimum legal requirement)

This basic level of coverage protects you against claims made by other people for injury or damage to their property, however, it’s important to note that third-party only doesn’t cover any damage to your own vehicle or injuries you may sustain.

  • Third-party, fire and theft

Third-party, fire and theft coverage offers everything included in third-party only policy, with the added protection against fire damage to your vehicle or theft. It’s worth noting that TPFT policies still don’t cover damage to your own car in the event of an accident that was your fault. This limitation can leave you exposed to potentially significant repair costs.

Policy Expert only offers Comprehensive cover.

FAQs

Do I need a credit check to buy car insurance?

When you request a quote, we may perform a soft credit check. This doesn’t affect your credit score. A hard credit check is only carried out if you choose to pay for your policy in monthly instalments. This will be done by our credit provider.

How do I estimate my mileage?

Accurately estimating annual mileage is important. This can be done by considering typical usage patterns, such as regular journeys and occasional longer trips, or by reviewing previous mileage if that information is available.

How do I claim on my car insurance?

The fastest and easiest way to report a claim is online.

For more detailed information, check out our guide on how to make a car insurance claim.

We see claims for all sorts of reasons. The most common causes include:

·       Multi-vehicle or single vehicle accidents

·       Fire damage

·       Theft

·       Vandalism or malicious damage

·       Windscreen damage

Most accidental damage claims happen when you or another driver:

·       Hit your car from behind

·       Damage your car whilst it's parked

·       Collide at a roundabout or fail to give way

·       Change lanes unexpectedly

·       Pull out from side roads

·       Hit stationary objects like fences, bollards or posts

·       Collide with animals, people or cyclists

When claims are most likely:

We tend to see more claims during winter months when mornings and evenings are darker, and weather conditions worsen with rain, ice or snow.

In summer, claims usually drop slightly when school holidays begin, as there are fewer cars on the road during peak times.

Why does car insurance go up?

Car insurance premiums can increase due to various factors, including:

  • Overall increase in claim costs
  • Changes in your personal circumstances (e.g., moving home)
  • Making a claim or receiving motoring convictions
  • Industry-wide factors like changes in taxation or regulation

Am I covered to drive other vehicles?

Cover for driving other vehicles is not included as standard and, where available, is subject to eligibility criteria such as age, occupation and policy terms. It applies in limited circumstances. You can check if this applies to you in your policy documents once insurance has been purchased, or by contacting us.

Can I add more drivers to my policy?

Yes, you can add more drivers to your policy, subject to certain criteria. To do this, you can either log into the customer portal or contact our motor team on 0330 0600 602.

Is windscreen cover included in my policy?

Windscreen cover is an important aspect of car insurance that many drivers overlook. With our Silver and Gold policies, we offer windscreen cover which includes all windows, not just the front windscreen, but we exclude panoramic roofs. Always check your policy details or contact us to confirm your level of coverage. Windscreen cover is not included in our Bronze policy.

Does Policy Expert cover electric vehicles?

We can cover hybrid vehicles, but we don't offer cover for electric cars. Our car insurance provides comprehensive protection for petrol and diesel cars. We offer multiple levels of cover to suit different needs and budgets – check out our different car insurance policies to learn more.
