As you may know, most standard travel insurance policies do not cover you for winter sports. From the increased perceived risk of injury to the value of your expensive ski wear and equipment, if you’re planning to hit the slopes then you’ll need a dedicated winter sports travel insurance policy.
Recent statistics show that one in five skiers and snowboarders are forced to use their insurance to claim for loss, damage and injury so don’t tempt fate and be left to deal with huge bills, get a travel insurance policy.
Ski Insurance
If you’re heading to the slopes of Europe or North America for that long-awaited winter getaway or active break, make sure you’re fully protected with a comprehensive winter sports travel insurance policy. You’ll normally be covered for accident and injury, lost or stolen property and damaged equipment, as well as standard cover for lost luggage, travel delays and holiday cancellations.
If you’re renting your ski equipment, you may only be covered for a limited amount. Read your policy documents thoroughly to make sure you’re fully covered for all eventualities.
Snowboarding Insurance
As well as the standard travel cover features, specific snowboarding insurance policies provide tailored cover for medical emergencies such as piste rescue and closure, damage or loss of owned or hired snowboard equipment, personal liability cover and ski pass cover.
Extreme Winter Sports Insurance
If you’re planning a spot of off-piste skiing, heli-skiing, Nordic skiing, glacier skiing, mono-skiing, snowmobiling, snow-sledging or tobogganing then you’ll probably need to take out an extended policy to cover you for the increased risk.
Many policies will not cover you for pursuits in areas designated as unsafe by local resort management unless accompanied by a qualified and experienced guide.
You may need to pay an additional premium for hazardous activities such as cat skiing, dry-slope skiing, freestyle skiiing, dog-sledding, ice-diving, kite boarding, luging / bobsleigh, ski-acrobatics, ski-biking, ski-flying, ski-jumping, ski-mountaineering, ski-racing, ski run walking, ski-yawing, ski-dooing, snow-blading, snow-tubing, snow-skating and snowcat skiing.
Always check the small print of your policy and confirm that you’re fully covered before you travel. Many extreme sports exclude personal liability protection so always check your policy documentation.
