Retail Insurance: The Basics

If you’re an independent retailer and you’re looking for business insurance, it’s worth doing your homework to make sure that you’re getting the right level of cover at the right price. Don’t pay for extended cover that you don’t really need and do make sure that what’s important is fully protected.

•    Do you own or operate a shop, salon or retail outlet?
•    Do you sell goods or provide a service from dedicated business premises?
•    Do you store retail items and stock intended for future sale?
•    Do you employ staff?

If so, then you'll probably need a tailored retail insurance policy. For starters, it's likely you’ll need a policy that offers buildings, contents, public and employers' liability cover as a minimum. Then you can add the extra features you may need to make sure your business is completely protected. Loss of income, public and products liability, employee theft and commercial legal protection are all optional features that you can usually include to enhance your business protection.

Shop Buildings & Contents Insurance
When comparing shop insurance quotes, make sure you’re covered for stock, fixtures and fittings and equipment in the event of flood, fire or other types of damage. If you handle large quantities of cash, you might also need money cover in the event of theft and robbery.

Make sure the policy covers computers and electronic office equipment, such as laser printers, fax machines and photocopiers, stock in trade and goods in trust, shop fixtures and fittings, interior decorations and damage or breakage to the shop front and employees personal effects.

Make sure you’re covered for landlord’s fixtures and fittings including walls, gates and fences, yards, car parks and pavements, subsidence and flooding.
