Cutting the cost of business insurance for shops

Running a business isn’t always easy and the costs can mount up. So, when it comes to renewal time, don’t simply stick with your current insurer – compare business insurance quotes from range of reputable business insurance providers and you could be amazed how much money you could save.

If you want cheap business insurance, follow our handy tips for reducing your shop insurance premiums.

1.Make sure your shop is fitted with an insurer-approved intruder alarm. The alarm must be fitted by a NACOSS or SSAIB approved installer and meet BS4737 or PD 6662:2004 standards.

2. Fit either a BS3621 standard 5-lever mortise deadlock or a BS3621 standard deadlocking rim latch to the main entry/exit door and ensure the deadlocks are used whenever the shop is closed for business or left unattended.

3. Fit metal roller shutters on all external doors and accessible windows. Windows and roof lights could also be fitted with metal grilles or security bars to minimise the risk of unauthorised entry.

4. Always take appropriate action to prevent and minimise loss, damage, injury or accident.

5. Keep the property in a good state of repair – regular maintenance will help minimise the risk of break-in, fire, flooding and any other unexpected occurrences.

6. Be vigilant when recruiting staff. Always check references before selecting employees.

7. If your retail premises are modified, extended or enhanced in any way, always inform your insurance provider, however minor.

8. Reduce your risks. Always adhere to health and safety regulations and advice to avoid public and third-party liability claims. Make sure staff are fully trained and aware of public safety obligations.

9. Spread the cost of your annual insurance premium by paying monthly.

10. Consider combining with your business vehicle insurance to take advantage of any multi-cover discounts.
