Legal Protection Explained

If you choose to include Legal Protection in your home insurance policy it can offer you a whole host of benefits.

What is it?
Legal protection gives you access to professional advice and access to legally qualified personnel. This may come in the form of a helpline where you can speak to experts about legal matters. It may also cover your legal costs up to a specified amount (for example, £100,000) if you decide to take legal action or require the services of legal staff.

What does it include?

Legal protection may include personal injury claims where you’ve had an accident at work (such as repetitive strain injury) or in a public place (such as a trip or fall). Personal injury can also result from medical or clinical negligence and this may be part of your legal protection policy.

Other inclusions could be disputes arising when buying or selling your home; you may be able to take legal advice or pursue a claim. Civil claims may also be covered, for example taking action against a neighbour regarding noise or a boundary dispute.

Employment matters may also be included such as a case of unfair dismissal or discrimination in terms of race, gender or sexuality.

Also included could be legal advice and action regarding faulty goods or services, such as a holiday where you unexpectedly end up next to a building site.

What to be aware of

Legal Protection Cover will usually increase your premium. Some policies offer legal protection at no extra cost but always compare policies like-for-like as not all services are offered in all policies. If you travel frequently, check whether your policy covers you outside the UK. Also check if family members are covered within your policy. Remember to read your policy documents carefully; it could save a lot of time and money in the long run.
