Before you sign up and accept your home insurance quote, make sure you read and digest all of the finer details. It’s this information that basically dictates what you can claim for, lists any limitations or restrictions and highlights key points that you need to be aware of during the period that your policy is valid.
Will your property be empty for longer than 30 days at a time?
Insurers don’t like this idea as it leaves your home vulnerable. The conditions of the policy might stipulate that you inform them of any periods of extended absence and that you arrange for your home to be regularly checked by a friend or neighbour. Failure to do this could invalidate your insurance.
Don’t disregard the obvious
If you leave windows and doors unlocked or valuable items on show and you get burgled then it’s not difficult to understand why your insurer might not meet your claim. Always lock any windows that have locks, close windows and doors in any areas of your house that are unoccupied (even if you’re in another part of the house), and enable your burglar alarm at night and whenever you’re out.
Report every theft or attempted theft
If your house has been burgled or an attempt to gain unlawful entry has occurred, tell the police. Your insurer will need a crime reference number to proceed with any claim.
Do you work from home?
If you conduct any business from your home, even on a part-time basis, then you must inform your insurer. Working from home might not be a problem but it's wise to declare this before you sign-up. Your work from home could affect your contents policy due to the potentially higher value of business-related equipment than the usual domestic arrangement. What will increase your premiums though, is if you need to include employers' liability insurance, public liability insurance or professional indemnity insurance. Declare all to your provider and make sure you’re covered.
Of course, every policy and provider is different so don’t automatically assume that you’ll receive the same terms and conditions as your previous insurer. We know you have better things to do, but just a few minutes checking over your paperwork could pay off should you ever need to claim.
