Finding the best car insurance

If you own a car, chances are you’ve already browsed the web looking for the best car insurance deals around. Or, are you the kind of person that simply renews your existing car insurance because it’s easier than ringing around or doing a little research?

Consider what your car is worth. If it’s less than £1000 then a fully comprehensive policy might end up costing more than the actual vehicle! Think about third party cover, or third party, fire and theft for a much lower premium but do work out if you could afford to replace or repair your car if it is destroyed or damaged.

Check the small print to make sure you’re not paying for cover you don’t really need. Many fully comprehensive policies offer extra features such as courtesy car cover, GAP insurance, personal injury cover and legal expenses cover. By removing these from your policy, you could save pounds.

Don’t assume the cheapest quote is best for your needs. Although the low price may be appealing, it won’t feel so good if you need to claim and you find that you’re not fully covered. Always check the small print and compare the policy features carefully before you sign up.

Protect your No Claims Discount. After all, it’s taken a few years to accumulate and it’s only right that your safe driving is rewarded. NCD means that you will normally receive a reduction on the next year's premiums and this should increase the longer you go without claiming.

Most insurers allow you to protect your no claims discount after four claim-free years but this will usually add to the cost of your premium. Importantly though, if you do need to make a claim you won’t lose your valuable no claims discount.

Think about combining your policy. Adding a partner or family member with a clean license and driving record to your policy may reduce your premium in some cases. As long as you live at the same address, many insurers offer discounts for the perceived lower risk.
