While many of us are content with some basic home improvements, increasing numbers of Brits are taking on large scale refurbishment projects – such as erecting a conservatory or building a patio.

According to statistics released by Santander in April this year, the total cost of DIY disasters is around £331 million per year. That’s a fair few DIY disasters!

Insurance provider AXA, also predicted earlier this year that around 20% of DIY enthusiasts would suffer some sort of accident during the Easter break. This could range from paint spillages to more serious problems like broken furniture and water damage.

Insurance your self against DIY disasters

Mintel’s consumer intelligence reports predict a growing DIY trend throughout 2010, with the recent economic downturn forcing many households to make savings wherever possible. Arming ourselves with tools and Doing It Ourselves is an increasingly popular way of saving the pennies.

However, without adequate home insurance, it’s estimated that mishaps are costing many people more than they anticipated. It’s costing each money-conscious DIY fan an average of £344 to make repairs.

So, if you’re planning a renovation project or even a simple home spruce up this summer – check you have sufficient home insurance that includes accidental damage cover. Always read your policy details carefully to check what you’re covered for.
