Postcodes have become more and more important to providing information to government and financial organisations about you and your home over the last couple of decades.nil

What yours is can affect everything from your credit rating to the schools your children can attend and the amount you pay for home and car insurance.

Postcodes and the housing market

Postcodes have also become an increasing factor in how desirable an area where you live is to those looking to buy a home.

Just one street over and the postcode can change, potentially knocking off, or adding on, thousands to the price of a property.

Which is why, when recent studies such as that carried out by the Royal Mail to find out Britain’s most ‘desirable’ postcodes, they’re paid such attention to, and even sometimes quoted as a ‘selling point’ by estate agents.

Postcodes where life can’t get much better

In the study, Royal Mail looked at various factors to decide on which postcodes represented the areas where life can’t get much better in England, Scotland and Wales.

The factors given most weighting were education possibilities and results, crime, quality of health and the affordability of housing.

Many such studies don’t take into account the price of housing and so you tend to end up with the poshest parts of London and the South East and other areas with high concentrations of the wealthy always at the top.

However, the fact Royal Mail has factored home affordability ensures the results become more realistic destinations for those looking to up sticks and improve their quality of life. Other lesser factors included levels of homelessness and household overcrowding.

Here are the five most desirable postcodes in each part of the UK in the study:
