What is the Plain English campaign?

The Plain English campaign, aims to simplify documents by removing jargon and simplifying complicated information.

The Crystal Mark, the Plain English stamp of approval, is used by organisations who want to provide the clearest possible information to their customers. Only documents that are clear and understandable are approved to bear the Crystal Mark.

What does it mean for Policy Expert customers?

Policy Expert is one of only a handful of insurers that have been working closely with the Plain English Campaign, and we now have the Crystal Mark on all Policy Expert Home Insurance policy wordings. The Crystal Mark means our policy wordings use every day English, with words like 'we' and 'you' instead of 'the insured'. Our documents include clear, helpful headings with a good sized, simple typeface. Wherever possible we’ve eliminated jargon, and only use straightforward words and descriptions.

Policy Expert wholeheartedly believes that all our customers should have clear, simple and understandable policies, with no hidden clauses or restrictions. That’s why all Policy Expert Home Insurance policy wordings carry the Crystal Mark.

Our commitment to Plain English:

Clear and simple language, written in 'everyday' English

  • A good type size and clear readable typeface
  • No jargon, or insurance specific terminology (or where this is unavoidable, offering a simple definition)
  • Content with a logical flow, defined with helpful and consistent headings
  • Straightforward content, that's easy to understand for all customers
